Physical Damage insurance for truckers

Physical damage insurance protects your own equipment. If your tractor or trailer is damaged or stolen, it pays to repair or replace it — and if you are financing or leasing your truck, your lender will require it.

What physical damage covers

  • Collision with another vehicle or object, and rollovers
  • Theft of the tractor or trailer
  • Fire, hail, wind, flood and falling objects
  • Vandalism
  • Optional: towing, downtime and rental reimbursement

Who needs it

Owner-operators and fleets that own or finance their equipment. Leased owner-operators often need it too, since the motor carrier’s policy typically does not cover your truck.

Common requirements

  • Usually required by banks and leasing companies
  • Coverage is based on stated value or actual cash value
  • Higher deductibles lower your premium
  • We send loss-payee certificates to your lender

Requirements change by state, cargo and contract. This page is general information — your agent will confirm what applies to your operation.

What is stated value?

It is the value you declare for your truck when the policy starts. In a total loss you are generally paid the lower of the stated value or the actual cash value, so it is important to set it accurately.

Is physical damage required?

Not by the FMCSA, but almost every lender and leasing company requires it. If your truck is paid off, it is still the only coverage that pays to fix your own equipment.

Can I add downtime coverage?

Many carriers offer downtime or rental reimbursement endorsements. Ask your agent — it helps keep income flowing while your truck is in the shop.
